Two-Time Cy Young Award Winner Bret Saberhagen’s Make a Difference Foundation
Kicks Off 2007 Campaign to Benefit Juvenile Diabetes
The Inter/Media Foundation Provides TV & Radio PSAs
As a two-time Cy Young Award winner, Bret Saberhagen perfected the fastball, the curve and the off speed pitch. But now he has a pitch that may be one of the most important of his illustrious life—pitching for children with diabetes.
Saberhagen, who launched the Bret Saberhagen Make a Difference Foundation in 2004, is focusing the Foundation’s goals in 2007 on raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Each year the Foundation selects a worthy cause that helps children and this year, starting with his favorite time of the year--baseball season—Saberhagen will rally the public to help him drive donations to the Foundation in the effort to change the lives of kids afflicted with juvenile diabetes.
Children with diabetes constitute a significant number of the 20.8 million Americans who have been diagnosed with the disease. “Type 1” diabetes, known as juvenile diabetes, results when a child’s pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. While scientists do not yet fully understand the causes, it appears the body’s own the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Most children with diabetes require insulin shots daily and suffer from a variety of other diabetes-related illnesses and conditions. It takes a tremendous toll on both child and parent.
“When I watch my own kids play baseball or participate actively in their physical and social lives, it reminds me that we are fortunate to be so healthy,” said Saberhagen. “We have a responsibility to help those who aren’t. I am proud to make juvenile diabetes a focus of our 2007 fund raising program. Come help us Make a Difference in the lives of diabetic children.”
People contributing $30 to the Bret Saberhagen Make a Difference Foundation will receive a personally autographed baseball and those submitting $20 will be sent an autographed photo. Saberhagen pitched 18 years in the major leagues with Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox. Saberhagen, who retired in 2001, accumulated two Cy Young Awards, a Gold Glove Award, MVP of the 1985 World Series and twice was awarded Come Back Player of the Year.
On Saberhagen’s winning team for this effort is The Inter/Media Foundation, an organization that was founded by the Inter/Media Advertising® and the Inter/Media Group of Companies™, a $400-million advertising conglomerate based in Encino, CA. Inter/Media--headed by Robert and Sydney Yallen-- is utilizing the resources and expertise of its seven companies to “give back” to society by helping those who support worthwhile causes. Inter/Media is aiding the Bret Saberhagen Make a Difference Foundation by creating promotional spots and disseminating fund-raising television, radio and print public service announcements across the country.
“We are pleased to kick off the Inter/Media Foundation by supporting Bret Saberhagen’s Make a Difference Foundation. As we both have teenage sons, Bret and I share a mutual concern for America’s youth,” said Robert Yallen, President of the Inter/Media Group of Companies. “It is exciting for my dad, Syd and I, to aid Bret in his mission because we all feel strongly about Making a Difference for kids.”
